Ubuntu Code

The day before yesterday, I came back from UDS, which is Ubuntu's semi-annual developer summit. As a part of an internationally distributed team, these summits (and the sprints in between) are our rare chances to meet each other for some high-bandwidth communication and of course lots of fun.

This UDS was my fourth, and my second after joining Canonical. Being part of the Ubuntu Server Team, I participated in most of the sessions on the server track (maybe even them all, I'm not entirely sure), where we discussed everything from default security settings to server management gui's, calendaring options to boot experience, and various virtualisation things.

Over the course of the next few weeks, we'll be writing up the blueprints for the features we discussed. Blueprints are detailed descriptions of the problems we're trying to solve and how we're going to solve them. These form the basis of the work we'll be doing over the course of this release cycle.

Personally, I'll be working on making Ubuntu more suitable as a virtual guest. Among many other things, This involves working on the virtual kernel flavour, so that we can get a highly optimised kernel for virtual environments. I'll also be putting more work into ubuntu-vm-builder to make it even more solid, and also be thinking a bit about how to make it usable on other distributions. I will probably also be putting some work into getting Ubuntu support into other distribution's mechanism for virtual machine provisioning, so that we don't exclude ourselves from those kind of scenarios. Lots of cool stuff to do, so little time :)
