New vm-builder released
Some of you probably already noticed that the new vm-builder is available in the repositories.
What's new? Well, it's been rewritten from scratch. This time in Python. Why rewrite something that was perfectly functional? Well, it's meant to be used not only as the cli we know from ubuntu-vm-builder, but also as a library embedded in other applications, most written in Python, so it seemed like a sensible choice. It's arguably also quite a bit more pleasent to do complex logic in Python than in bash. :) It has also been written to support more than just Ubuntu (hence the renaming frem ubuntu-vm-builder to just vm-builder), although the only distro plugin available as of this writing is the Ubuntu one. If you feel like working on plugins for other distros, please get in touch. Hypervisor support has also been pluginised, so adding new ones should be relatively easy. Currently, we have (of course) kvm, VMWare, and Xen. Xen is a rather different beast for various reasons, so it has forced me to rethink a lot of things several times over, but it's all functional now, but I expect that it'll still need some work to be as neat as the kvm support.
If you want to play with it, install the python-vm-builder package, and try sudo vmbuilder --help. This should give you the basic options. Once you specify your target hypervisor and distro, you'll get more options (try sudo vmbuilder kvm ubuntu --help and you'll see what I mean). Bugs can as always be reported on Launchpad.
