Announcing Eucalyptus

I'm very pleased to announce the availability of Eucalyptus in Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope!

From the package description:

EUCALYPTUS is an open source service overlay that implements elastic computing using existing resources. The goal of EUCALYPTUS is to allow sites with existing clusters and server infrastructure to co-host an elastic computing service that is interface-compatible with Amazon's EC2.
Simply put: Eucalyptus gives you your very own EC2 in your own data center.

Being interface-compatible with EC2 means that anything you might already be doing with EC2 you can now do with your local Eucalyptus instance.

There are three notable packages:

eucalyptus-cloud
The cloud controller. You will generally only have one of these. It provides Walrus (Eucalyptus' S3 implementation) and is the part of Eucalyptus that users will talk to using the EC2 API.

eucalyptus-cc
The cluster controller. If you're familiar with EC2, you can think of this as the master server for an availabilty zone. Most people will only have one of these.
eucalyptus-nc
The node controller. This is the component that instantiates your virtual machines (instances, in EC2 speak). You will install this on each of your servers that will be running virtual machines for Eucalyptus.

The quick start guide:

  • Install all three packages on a machine with lots of available ressources, both in terms of CPU, RAM, and disk space. sudo apt-get install eucalyptus-cloud eucalyptus-cc eucalyptus-nc
  • After a while (perhaps up to a minute or two, even on beefy servers), you should be able to access the admin interface on https://ip_or_hostname_of_your_server:8443/. (You must use https, not http).
  • Set up the admin user (should be self-explanatory)
  • Add the cluster controller in the configuration tab
  • From the command line, add the node to the cluster: "sudo euca_conf -addnode name_of_this_server" and follow the instructions it gives you.
  • At this point you should be ready to upload kernels, ramdisks, and filesystem images to your cloud. You can find a bit of information about how here: http://eucalyptus.cs.ucsb.edu/wiki/EucalyptusImageManagement_v1.4. It is not completely up-to-date with the version we have in Ubuntu, but it's very helpful nonetheless.

A few notable differences between our packages and what you'll see mentioned on the Eucalyptus website are that our version uses KVM as the default hypervisor and it also supports EBS. I expect the upstream documentation will be updated soon to reflect these cool new features.

You know what's really great about this situation.

The Ubuntu maintainers were given preferential access to a private codebase. There is no instance of the Eucalyptus 1.5 codebase supporting kvm outside of the tarballs which form the Jaunty packages. The "upstream releases" that the Jaunty package changelogs refer to do not exist as public releases in any real sense.

The only publicly available sourcecode of pre-release Eucalyptus 1.5 that I can find is in the tarballs of the Jaunty packages. There isn't a public bzr tree, there isn't a public Eucalyptus project instance in launchpad from which you can pull upstream sourcecode from. The only people who have had access to the sourcecode outside of the Eucalyptus project itself has been the Ubuntu maintainers.

I recently talked to the project lead about source access and after some miscommunication I was giving the nod to make use of the tarballs in the Jaunty packages to start other packaging work..while waiting for the upstream project to make its code release. But it was made clear that those tarballs are not official project releases. The only reason I have access to the sourcecode at all is because there's no way Ubuntu can avoid exposing the tarballs In Launchpad.

That's the reason you don't see any Debian packages. This is essentially still private code, and Ubuntu has been granted preferred access. Could you even get private unpublished code into Debian?

So Here's the real question. How appropriate is it for Ubuntu to be integrating and making available private code like this? While its certainly legal to do, is this the sort of situation the Ubuntu community really wants to encourage to happen repeatedly?

Do you really want a future where individual distributions persuade independent academic projects to give them preferential access so they can make a big splash announcing being the first to package a project by being given months of preferential access ahead of the public? I think that's a very dangerous sort of game to play.

What if a project released publicly funded BSD code preferentially to Microsoft or to Amazon or to Google months before it was publicly available? Would that be okay with you? Would you be okay if those sort of for-profit competitors to Canonical were given preferential access to publicly funded coded?

Do you think its reasonable that a publicly funded project should be preferentially giving its products out to any external groups? I don't. I think publicly funded code should be equitably accessible to everyone without preference.

This is a deep question that impacts more than just this one National Science Foundation project. It comes down to what is an equitable public policy in terms of access to publicly funded works across a huge spectrum of publicly funded science and technology research.

Personally I think there's an unspoken mandate that the National Science Foundation funded projects need to be released back to the public in a timely manner..without preferential access.

I'm hopeful that this broad topic is something that will come up in next week's Cyberinfrastructure Sustainability workshop. I think its a bigger issue than you realize. And I would hope that once Canonical gets together and thinks it over, they'll realize that being supportive of a culture with demands equal access to publicly funded code is in its long term best interest in the face of competition from proprietary companies who have a far greater capacity to pillage academic projects for good ideas, before they are publicly published.

Jef, not releasing the code was not our decision. The Eucalyptus group had some concerns about making public alpha ad beta releases, and that's entirely their decision. If you took a second to look at the package we provide, you'd see that it's released under a BSD-ish license, and you are entirely free to use the tarballs we put in Ubuntu. We're not trying to hide anything, we just can't really make releases on our upstream's behalf.

No need to go all FUDy about it.

Canonical either agrees with that, or they don't. Either they will support equal access to source code, or they will seek short-term competitive advantage by gaining preferential access and help re-inforce the status quo behavior.

Canonical might be patting itself on the back right now for being able to get prefential access. But over time, I fully expect Canonical to come to realize that a culture of open and equal access to publicly funded research and tools serves your interests far better.

Jef, you're barking up the wrong tree.

  • We wouldn't have put Eucalyptus in Ubuntu if the Eucalyptus team didn't want us to. Heck, he probably wouldn't have been able to without their help (not within the same timeframe, certainly).
  • If they didn't want it in Ubuntu, they wouldn't have given us access to the source code. We were given access with the explicit purpose of getting Eucalyptus into Ubuntu.

I don't have to justify anything to you. You're seeing ghosts where there are none. We wanted to put Eucalyptus in Ubuntu. We were going to put 1.4 in, if that was all we could do. We told the Eucalyptus team about stuff we wanted in Eucalyptus (most notably kvm support), and they've been responsive to our requests. All we've done is ask.
